Net Neutrality Turns Down Telecom, Cable and Wireless

Net Neutrality Turns Down Telecom, Cable and Wireless

The U.S. Appeals Court upheld Net Neutrality today.  Net Neutrality allows government regulation of telecom, cable and wireless services.

Relating to internet service providers (ISPs), the FCC will oversee how they handle web traffic on their networks. This includes allowing the FCC to review consumer complaints against ISPs.

Next, the telecom industry will take their fight to the Supreme Court.

Consumers, the FCC and internet businesses seemed pleased with the outcome.

LinkedIn Data Breach May 17

LinkedIn Data Breach May 17

Notice of Data Breach

You may have heard reports recently about a security issue involving LinkedIn. We would like to make sure you have the facts about what happened, what information was involved, and the steps we are taking to help protect you.

What Happened?

On May 17, 2016, we became aware that data stolen from LinkedIn in 2012 was being made available online. This was not a new security breach or hack. We took immediate steps to invalidate the passwords of all LinkedIn accounts that we believed might be at risk. These were accounts created prior to the 2012 breach that had not reset their passwords since that breach.

What Information Was Involved?

Member email addresses, hashed passwords, and LinkedIn member IDs (an internal identifier LinkedIn assigns to each member profile) from 2012.

What We Are Doing

We invalidated passwords of all LinkedIn accounts created prior to the 2012 breach that had not reset their passwords since that breach. In addition, we are using automated tools to attempt to identify and block any suspicious activity that might occur on LinkedIn accounts. We are also actively engaging with law enforcement authorities.

LinkedIn has taken significant steps to strengthen account security since 2012. For example, we now use salted hashes to store passwords and enable additional account security by offering our members the option to use two-step verification.

What You Can Do

We have several dedicated teams working diligently to ensure that the information members entrust to LinkedIn remains secure. While we do all we can, we always suggest that our members visit our Safety Center to learn about enabling two-step verification, and implementing strong passwords in order to keep their accounts as safe as possible. We recommend that you regularly change your LinkedIn password and if you use the same or similar passwords on other online services, we recommend you set new passwords on those accounts as well.

What is Didi?

What is Didi?

Apple is investing in Didi. What is Didi? Didi Chuxing is Uber’s competitor in China. Didi provides around 11 million rides a day via taxis and vehicles for hire.

Apple’s sales were up in China in the last fiscal year, but they were down in the last quarter. Also, there were problems recently between Chinese government regulators and Apple recently when they stopped Apple’s iBooks and iTunes services in their country. So, it seems to be goodwill that they would invest in the Didi Chuxing smartphone app.

Virtual Reality and 360 Video Panel

Virtual Reality and 360 Video Panel

Virtual Reality 360 Production RevolutionThe B & H Photo live stream event, A Production Revolution: Virtual Reality and 360 Video Live Panel Discussion, today shared interesting takes about virtual reality and 360 video.

What is virtual reality (VR)? “…the creation and stimulation of environments that you can interact with and experience. Virtual reality is simply the next way that we are going to tell stories. Take it a whole step beyond film and photos and traditional story telling methods.” Nicolas Cambata

Notes & Takeaways:
Treat production with virtual reality and 360 video like a stage play.

Be mindful of framing; watch for objects which may interfere with the immersive experience (foreground).
Treat the camera(s) like a person and think about the human reaction

“Painting out” in frames is possible.
Stitching is necessary to “stitch” overlapping fields of view. It turns the individual videos into a single, high resolution, seemless panoramic video. Click here to check out VideoStitch tutorial.
Parallax will need to be corrected. Parallax error is introduced by the slightly different points of view of each camera. To have a perfect stitch, each camera and lenses would have to be at the same position, which is physically impossible.

The “Holodeck” Star Trek experience could become reality with VR and 360 video.
VR and 360 video is an emerging field and the industry for it is now being created.
Gaming industry is already producing and taking advantage of vr and 360 video.
Be on the lookout for immersive social media utilizing vr and 360 video
Retina laser projection
Improvements with hardware and headsets

Brand education is key to success.

Is Scala a More Efficient Programming Language?

Is Scala a More Efficient Programming Language?

Recently I’ve heard more mention of Scala in programming realms that it could become a better standard for programming languages.  It seems they are gaining popularity. According to their website, Twitter, LinkedIn and Intel are using Scala with their systems. It’s goal is to create a more efficient programming language.

Comparison to other programming languages
“Scala is statically typed, while both Groovy and Clojure are dynamically typed. This makes the type system more complex and difficult to understand but allows almost all type errors to be caught at compile-time and can result in significantly faster execution. ”  via Wikipedia

The programming language name is a blend of the words “scalable” and “language”. Martin Odersky began developing Scala in 2001.  The first version of Scala was introduced to the public in 2004. The second version released in 2006. The current version is 2.11.8.

Will It Go Round in Circles?

Will It Go Round in Circles?

Back in February, GoPro announced that their spherical rig was beginning to launch. Six synchronized GoPro cameras capturing 8k video.

As the 2016 NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) began earlier this week, GoPro reveiled that the Omni is now available. Also, they launched Android and iOS apps for a new VR platform.

Get it on pre-order for $4,999.99. Watch their video below:

Here’s the info from their website.

GoPro Omni Mark JohnsonThe all-inclusive Omni rig includes:
*Six cameras act as one: Interact with the primary camera in the array to configure settings or initiate the start/stop of recording for all six cameras.
*The proven image quality of the HERO4 Black…times six: Produce high-res images that virtual reality viewers will notice. Omni may also be used for “over capture”; capture at 8K and extract an HD deliverable.
*Optimized workflow: capture using Omni, use GoPro Omni Importer for preview, data management and rendering, fine tune the content in Kolor Autopano® Video, then proof the content in GoPro VR player and publish it to the GoPro VR website.
*By collaborating with Adobe®, GoPro further solves the pain points of editing spherical content by enabling native handling of 360-degree video up to 8K resolution within Adobe® Premiere® Pro CC, and Adobe After Effects® CC.

FYI, this post title is a play on a song (Will It Go Round In Circles) created by one of the world’s greatest keyboard players, Billy Preston. RIP. Check him out!
